About the Test of Mandarin as a Foreign Language

The Test of Mandarin as a Foreign Language (TOCFL) has been developed and is promoted by the Steering Committee for the Test of Proficiency-Huayu (SC-TOP) as a standardized test of Taiwanese Mandarin for non-native speakers of the language. TOCFL draws reference from the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages with the objective of compatibility with existing international language proficiency standards. Presently, the TOCFL places learners in four proficiency bands over eight levels. The four bands include: Band Novice, Band A, Band B, and Band C. Each band can be further separated into two levels based on a learner’s test result, namely Novice 1 and Novice 2 (for Band Novice), Level 1 and Level 2 (for Band A), Level 3 and Level 4 (for Band B), and Level 5 and Level 6 (for Band C). Test takers may choose to take TOCFL at the level that matches their educational background or language proficiency. For more information on TOCFL, please visit our website at: https://tocfl.edu.tw/
